Wisdom teeth are the third molars, which usually come in between ages 17 and 25. They are often removed when they are impacted, partly erupted, decayed, or crowding other teeth. Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out; x-rays help decide.
General dentists remove many erupted wisdom teeth. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons typically remove impacted wisdom teeth, especially those near the jaw nerve, and offer IV sedation or general anesthesia.
