What is a tooth extraction?

A tooth extraction removes a tooth that is badly damaged, infected, crowded or loose. A simple extraction removes a visible tooth with instruments. A surgical extraction may involve a small incision or removing bone to reach a broken or impacted tooth.

Tooth extraction: specialist or general dentist?

General dentists do most simple extractions and many surgical ones. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons handle complex cases, such as deeply impacted teeth, teeth close to nerves, or patients who need IV sedation or general anesthesia.

1 of Halifax's 50 clinics offering tooth extractions has an oral surgeon on staff. See oral surgeons in Halifax
